for our wedding

The big day is approaching very fast and preparations are in full swing.

As a precursor to the wedding to come, we have put together a glimpse of our wedding ceremonies in this post.

Today's Hindu Brahmin weddings have rituals spread over just a couple of days as compared to a five-day elaborate wedding in the past. Ours is going to be one such modern day wedding with no compromise on the spirit of the rituals.

Here's a brief look at our wedding schedule...

Sep 1, Thursday

விரதம் (Viradham) - The two-day wedding rituals are started off with prayers offered to the ancestors to seek their blessings and God's.

நிச்சயதார்த்தம் (Nischayadhartham) - This is the engagement ceremony where the bride and the groom are officially  engaged in God's name and the auspicious timing for the "Muhurtham" is set in everybody's presence. The "Thamboolam" plates containing the items required for the Muhurtham are exchanged between the bride's and the groom's families.

Sep 2, Friday - "THE" wedding day

முஹுர்த்தம் (Muhurtham) - This is the main wedding ceremony and has several parts to it, "Kaasi Yatrai", "Maalai Maatral" and"Oonjal" that leads up to the final, actual Muhurtham (auspicious time). As the bride is seated on her dad's lap (கன்னிகாதானம் - kannigaadhaanam), the groom ties the scared knot (தாலி - thaali) around her neck.

நலங்கு (Nalangu) - This is the time to relax and play after all the serious, hectic rituals. The bride and the groom have fun playing traditional ice-breaking games like finding the hidden object in the pot, breaking appalam over each other's heads etc. while the guests have fun witnessing them getting embarrassed :P

Wedding Reception - This is the first time the bride and the groom present themselves as a couple to friends and relatives :). The event is marked by guests congratulating the couple, who pose for 200+ pictures (phew!)  with the icing on the cake being ... GIFTS!!! :) :).

Sep 3, Saturday

கட்டு சாத கூடை (Kattu Saadha Koodai) - This is the ritual of packing food and giving it to the bride's and groom's families before they leave the hall finally.

Doesn't all this sound interesting? We would love to see you guys witness these in person. To get all the details of the place, date and time, take a look at these invitations which were sent out formally by our parents...
